Local Ohio cops nab Halloween revelersLANCASTER, Ohio -- Motorists headed through Fairfield County, Ohio this weekend to Athens -- for what has been deemed by police the worst Halloween party to date -- kept local law enforcement busy. At one point, traffic was so backed up, Ohio officials had to end a motor vehicle inspection check point they had set up, said State Highway Patrol Lt. Gary Lewis, Lancaster, Ohio post commander. Troopers wrote more than 100 citations Friday and Saturday.
Most drivers stopped -- some with carloads of people dressed in costume -- were headed to Athens, said Sgt. Jared Collins, Fairfield County, Ohio Sheriff's Office. Nearly 40 drug charges were filed by the sheriff's office alone, and in addition to marijuana, officers seized cocaine, hallucinogenic mushrooms and ecstasy.
Most arrests were not of local residents, but people traveling to the university town from across the state, said Lancaster, Ohio Police Chief Randy Lutz.
"Officers who worked over the weekend realized that it did back up traffic in certain areas," he said. "But for a little bit of inconvenience, we helped prevent possible criminal activity."
The teamwork enforcement approach also removed impaired drivers from the roads. Troopers arrested eight for driving under the influence, while Lancaster, Ohio police arrested one person. Five Lancaster, Ohio police officers worked in Athens during the Saturday night street party in assistance.
Problems in Athens included rioting; fights; assaults on officers, firefighters and city workers; a stabbing; two flipped cars and a series of fires.
City and campus police arrested or ticketed nearly 100 people overnight Saturday and responded to nearly 20 fights and at least five fires.
On Monday, Athens police chief Rick Mayer met with the mayor and city safety director to discuss increasing police presence, among other changes.
Two men from south central Ohio were stabbed early Sunday morning when they tried to stop another man from assaulting a woman, police said. One man's leg was slashed, severing the major artery supplying blood to the limb, and the other was stabbed repeatedly in the chest, collapsing a lung, police said. An officer was assaulted when he arrived at the fight; he was treated at a hospital and released.
Gregory Malta, 19, of Gibsonia, Pa., was charged with two counts of felonious assault, Mayer said.
Malta and the two stabbing victims, 20-year-olds Ryan Renner of Creola and Jeremy Kaltenbach of Chillicothe, all had come to town for the parties that feature bands and costume contests, Mayer said.
Renner and Kaltenbach were in fair condition Monday, said Ohio State University Medical Center spokeswoman Sherri Ellis, who would not release which man sustained which injury.
The Athens post of the State Highway Patrol arrested 15 people on drunken driving charges and arrested or cited four people on drug charges. Lt. Tom Dean said the patrol normally makes a third as many arrests in the area over a typical weekend.
The post also increased its patrol from four troopers to 10 overnight on Friday and Saturday, Dean said.
Campus police arrested four Ohio University students, spokesman Jack Jeffery said. If any students were involved in the fires or assaults handled by city police, the university will review the cases for possible discipline, he said.
Last year, 96 people were arrested over the Halloween weekend, authorities said.
The university does not sponsor the annual street parties, which draw thousands to the city.
Mayer said most of the party-goers each year are students or their visitors.
