Local Ohio man sentenced on drug charges

ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- A Zanesville, Ohio man was sentenced Monday to four years in prison on drug trafficking charges.

Judge Howard Zwelling sentenced Carlos Bojoroquez Lugo, 38, on three counts of felony aggravated trafficking in crystal methamphetamines and one felony count of trafficking in marijuana, said Muskingum County, Ohio Assistant Prosecutor James Workman. One crystal meth count had a school specification, meaning Lugo sold the drugs within the vicinity of a school.

Lugo also had his driver's license suspended for five years and he had $706 forfeited to the state of Ohio.

"He's a very nice guy and he was very cooperative with law enforcement," said Lugo's attorney, Mark Kaido. "He just got caught up with making an easy buck and had some dependency problems."

The crimes all occurred in 2003, Workman said. Police detectives picked up Lugo on tips from several confidential informants, leading them to set up a "controlled buy."

The trafficking in marijuana event occurred Aug. 7. Lugo sold 109.3 grams of marijuana to a confidential informant. The trafficking in crystal methamphetamines involved 2.7 grams of crystal meth, charging a confidential informant $100 for the product for each count. The trafficking in crystal meth charge with forfeiture occurred Oct. 16 and involved 27.2 grams, charging $1,600 to the confidential informant.

Workman said he believes Lugo has prior convictions from his native country of Puerto Rico, but the prosecutor's office and investigators were unable to receive those records.

"And my understanding is he is not a United States citizen at this time," he said.

Workman said the state is satisfied with the outcome.
